Why the drum is divided into three compartments

A Split-Pocket drum is one cylinder divided into three equal compartments, each a 120° segment. The machine turns the cylinder to bring each compartment to the door in turn, so a single machine loads and unloads three separate batches without mixing them.

  • Batches stay separate. Linen in one compartment cannot intertwine with linen in another, so an order that goes in as one batch comes out as one batch.
  • One compartment at a time. The operator loads and empties the compartment standing at the door, not the whole load at once.
  • The load sits around the axis. The goods are distributed over three segments of the cylinder instead of concentrated in a single mass.

An Open Pocket drum is a single compartment that takes the full load in one piece. Open Pocket suits a load that is one batch; Split-Pocket suits a load made up of separate batches, or one that has to be handled in portions.
